HOA approval for exterior paint colors
Repainting is one of the most common HOA requests. Most communities have an approved color palette, and a request with exact color names and where each one goes is usually approved quickly.
What HOAs usually check
- Colors: body, trim, front door and shutters, often from an approved palette.
- Neighbors: some HOAs don't allow the same scheme as the homes next door.
- Sheen: especially for trim and doors.
- Other surfaces: painting brick, stone or garage doors.
What to include in your request
- The architectural request form, filled in and signed
- Paint brand, color names and codes for each surface
- Swatches, or the palette scheme number if your HOA has one
- A photo of the home marked with where each color goes
- Painter name and planned dates
Repainting the same color
Many HOAs don't require approval to repaint in the existing approved colors, but some still want notice. If you're changing any color, even just the front door, plan on submitting a request. Painting doesn't need a city permit, though some historic districts review exterior colors.
Common questions
Can I paint my front door a different color?
Usually only from the approved palette. Front doors are one of the most common paint violations.
What if the palette doesn't have the color I want?
Some HOAs consider custom colors on request. Include a large swatch and photos of nearby homes.
How long does paint approval take?
Often a few days to a few weeks. Choosing palette colors usually speeds it up.
Build your paint approval packet
Upload your HOA's rules and describe the project. Approveway checks every rule, drafts the request form and cover letter, draws your plan and side view, and builds the packet you submit.
